University pay falling under Schweitzer administration
Pay for Montana university faculty has fallen from 41st to 45th in the nation during Brian Schweitzer's term as governor, according to MEA-MFT union official Erik Burke. Burke, whose union represents most of the faculty statewide, referred to the pay disparity as a "dirty little secret" in a Bozeman Daily Chronicle story today.
For Schweitzer, who just can't help but constantly compare himself to Governor Judy Martz, this must come as troubling news indeed.

come on... maybe you should take a class in how the Montana university system operates. the governor has no direct control over the universities whatsoever. there is a little board called the Board of Regents that governs them-- and until just recently, that board has been dominated by REPUBLICAN APPOINTEES. Get your facts together before you make a fool out of yourself... yet again!
You're absolutely right. I should take a class on how the Montana University System operates. Such a class might teach us that no more than four of the appointees may be from the same political party, which would prohibit the board from being "dominated by REPUBLICAN APPOINTEES."
That class might also include the fact that the current Board of Regents is composed of six Schweitzer appointees and one Martz appointee (granted, one of the Regents was a Racicot appointee, but was appointed to a second term by Schweitzer).
But sorry, I'll try and get my facts straight in the future so I'm not out there being a fool. Thanks for playing.
apparently you need a little lesson in communications as well. let me help you out: "REPUBLICAN APPOINTEES" does not mean republicans, but APPOINTED BY REPUBLICANS. Do you see the difference? The Board of Regents has been, until VERY RECENTLY, DOMINATED BY REPUBLICAN APPOINTEES.
It is true that the board is now home to more Schweitzer appointees than Martz appointees (thank God). Heres to the new Board fixing the mistakes of the republican nightmare!
Stan you kill me. The Board of Regents has been composed of a majority of Schweitzer appointees for more than a year, and "VERY RECENTLY" all but one of the appointees is a Schweitzer appointee.
Did you miss the part about how the law requires that only four may be of the same party? Exactly how is one party allowed to dominate? DO YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE?
Hey Carter - don't you just love having a battle of wits with an unarmed man? LOL!
auntie lib... thanks for watching. if you so enjoy a "battle with an unarmed man", why dont you chime in? the sidelines are safer, right!
carter, i see very well the difference but i'm afraid you may be a bit politically naive- i certainly didn't see martz appoint anyone who disagreed with her, and probably found someone who could put a (d) behind his/her name to fill the criteria. I did see, however, schweitzer reappoint someone racicot appointed, showing clear openness to the opposite party.
But, i fear we've gotten a bit off track. the fact still remains that your charge is mis-guided: the governor has NO DIRECT CONTROL over the university system OR the board of regents. enough said!
Stan - don't come in here and make wild claims with nothing to back it up. Gov. Schweitzer is renowned in Helena for appointing board members (and I'm talking all boards and commissions, not just the Regents) who will toe his line. That's not just my opinion, go ask any government observer in Helena and 9 out of 10 will agree with that statement. He's exercising more control over boards and commissions than any governor in memory (just go look at the stories about the Board of Livestock from earlier this year). Governor Martz consistently butted heads with the Board of Regents. We're getting no where in this argument, so we'll just leave it at that.
If it makes you feel better, I'll change the title of this article to "University pay falling under Schweitzer-appointed Board of Regents."
